The Antisana Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary of the Andean Condor is located near Antisana National Park around 1 hour from Quito. At this reserve we can observe the Andean Condors at close range, either at Chakana Photo Hides of their sleeping grounds, or throughout the Paramo Grasslands feeding on death deer carcasses. There are only around 130 Andean Condors left in the Wild because their habitat has been destroyed and their food poisoned. The Antisana Reserve is one of the last refugees of the Andean Condor and home to other 160 bird species.
Some of the frequent possible bird species include Andean Condor, American Kestrel, Curved-billed Tinamou, Shining Sunbeam, Red-crested Cotinga, Mountain Velvetbreast, Black Flowerpiercer, Giant Hummingbird, Spectacled Redstart, Great Thrush, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Andean Lapwing, Andean Ibis, Andean Gull, Yellow-billed Pintail, Andean Duck, Andean Teal, Ruddy Duck, Caranculated CaraCara, Ecuadorian Hillstar (at 12,000 feet), Great Horned Owl, Black-chested Buzzard Eagle, Aplomado Falcon and mammals like Spectacled Bear, Andean Fox, White-tailed Deer and others.
