Highlights of Andean Cock of the Rock, Toucans and Alambi Hummingbird Paradise Tour:
Early pick up around 4am from your hotel in Quito. Drive towards the West Slope Cloud Forest near Tandayapa Valley. Arrival to the Andean Cock of the Rock Lek, a display of singing sounds by the male birds to attract the females, often happens only from 6am to 730am.
Morning birding in the reserve main trails to observe Antpittas, Quails, Tanagers, Saltators, Toucans and Quetzals.
Target Bird Species: Andean Cock of the Rock, Black-winged Saltator, Masked Trogon, Ornate Flycatcher, Red-headed Barbet, Toucan Barbet, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Golden-headed Quetzal, Rufous Antpitta, Giant Antpitta, Ochre-breasted Antpitta, Yellow-breasted Antpitta, Dark-backed Wood-Quail, Flame-faced Tanager, Golden-napped Tanager, Bronze-winged Parrot, Red-billed Parrot and others.
After the reserve continue birding in Toucan Feeders close to Mindo Valley to observe Choco-endemic species of this extraordinary ecosystem. We will devote around 1 hour at the feeders while enjoying the view to the valley of Mindo.
Target Bird Species: Violet-tailed Sylph, Brown Violetear, Buff-winged Starfrontlet, Brown Inca, Empress Brilliant, Booted-racket Tailed, Velvet-Purple Coronet, Purple-bibbed WhiteTipp, Andean Emerald, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, Purple-throated Woodstar (Hummingbirds) and Palm Tanager, Flamed-rumped Tanager, Buff-throated Saltator, Ecuadorian Thrush, Pale-manibled Aracari, Thick-billed Euphonia, Orange-breasted Euphonia, White-lined Tanager, Golden-napped Tanager and others.
After enjoying this natural paradise we will start heading back towards Quito with a quick stop at Alambi Hummingbird Paradise. Here we can observe a variety of rare hummingbirds, 2 types of Quetzals at close range, and Dippers near the river. Afternoon return to Quito. Drop-off at your selected hotel.
